Bed scenes work a lot for a film's success: Vedita Pratap Singh

She is the true example of a small town girl, who made it big in the tinselville. Hailing from a Rajputana Khandaan, actress Vedita Pratap Singh can be defined as the perfect blend of beauty and brains. During a candid chat with Nabanita Maji from OneIndia, Vedita narrated her entire journey from being the winner of MTV Model Hunt till her entry in the Bollywood. Here are excerpts from Vedita's interview:

How did Bhindi Bazaar Inc. come your way as a model?

I am basically from Lucknow. But, after landing in Mumbai, the city broadened my horizon. I got into the modelling industry and won MTV Model Hunt. I did few commercials and many photo shoots. Finally, my dream came true when the film Bhindi Bazaar fell on my laps. I did it. The movie got me noticed to the world and I received critical acclaims for my role as Shabana. It was my first successful Bollywood break and just loved it.

Few days back, a controversy did hit the headlines after Veena Malik intentionally pushed you during the shooting of the film Mumbai 125 kms. What actually happened?

I wouldn't prefer to talk about it anymore. I don't want to be known for controversies, I want my acting to speak. I just want to stay away from it.

Tell us something about your upcoming film Mumbai 125 kms.

Mumbai 125 kms is a 3D Horror movie. The film is almost done and we are on the ending bit. The other casts of the film are Karanveer Vohra, Veena Malik, Vijay, Aparna and a new comer Joyee. Though I don't prefer to talk much about it, it was surely fun working with these people in the film.

What's your take on porn star Sunny Leone's debut in Bollywood?

Bollywood is great, they are giving opportunity to everyone. Sunny Leone is a porn star and since India has a huge population, it's natural that she would earn more name and money here. I think there should be certain restrictions over these porn stuffs, since it affects the growing kids.

Should porn movies be legalised in India?

This is a very debatable topic and an individualistic choice. At some point, I feel yes. When something is not reachable to you, you tend to get it at any cost. Because porn movies are illegal in India, it's of more hype in the country. The excitement is not watching porn, but the excitement is more about breaking the rule and watching out something which is illegal. Once it gets legal, the people won't find any interest in such movies.

How far do you think that skin shows and sex scenes work for a film's success?

Bed scenes work a lot for a film's success. Talking about the reality, certain section of people want to watch it. For example, let's talk about the movie Hate Story, it's doing good. Sex is overrated in India. Sex in foreign is normal, but not the same in India. Hence, people are mad for it. People want to watch skin shows, producers make such movies and fetch money out of it, hence the movie does good business. Like my film Bhindi Bazaar, my role was that of a prostitute, so I had to do hot scenes. But, it is not necessary that I have to do the same every time.

Bollywood is dealing a lot with bold and sensitive topics like sperm donation and homosexuality, these days. What's your take on this?

People don't want to watch the same old romances. A certain section of society want to evolve and see something beyond and useful. Lot of people wants something different. Talk about Vicky Donor, Dev D, Dostana, people loved these films. Hence, filmmakers are making such films.

What do think about stripping queen Poonam Pandey?

I know her personally, she is a very sweet person. I knew her from before she came into the limelight. We did few Calender shoots together. If I talk about her stripping acts, I feel that might be her agenda. She wants herself to be known like that. She might be feeling that she can earn fame out of it.

Would you ever like to be a part of the Bigg Boss reality show?

Oh! Of course. It's a big platform. I would love to be a part of it, if given an opportunity.

Your dream actors?

I would love to work with Salman Khan and Ranbir Kapoor, they are so hot.

I have nothing to prove in Bollywood: Mohanlal

At a time when young entrants from South are looking to make a strong presence in Bollywood, Malayalam superstar Mohanlal feels that although the reach of Hindi cinema is wider, he has nothing much to prove here as an actor.

Mohanlal made his acting debut in Malayalam cinema in 1978 with Thiranottam but the film was never released due to censorship issues. Later in 1980,he got to play the lead antagonist in his first release Manjil Virinja Pookkal at 20. Then, he went on to do several such roles in various movies before he established himself as a lead actor.

It was after the success of his 1986 film, Rajavinte Makan, that he was labeled a superstar of Malayalam cinema.

"I am working for 33 years there, what should I come and prove in Hindi industry. I am content and happy with my own language. Now if I get a very good and irresistible role then I will try and do a film here. I don’t want to prove anything," Mohanlal told.

"Lot of people, most of the actresses start from South.. they are newcomers they are trying to do Hindi films as the reach is big. There are so many factors. For actors like me it is fine," the 51-year-old said.

In 2002, Mohanlal played the role of a police officer in his first Bollywood movie Company, which introduced him to the Hindi-speaking audience in India. He won the IIFA star screen award for the best supporting actor in the Ram Gopal Varma directed movie.

Again in RGV’s Aag, a remake of Sholay, Mohanlal played the role of the protagonist Narasimham, a cop with a vendetta against the criminal Babban Singh played by Amitabh Bachchan. The movie bombed at the box office.

Ask him why he stayed away from Bollywood films even after being a superstar down South, he said, "I don’t know. Nothing like that."

He feels South films have a smaller reach in comparison to that of Hindi.

"Kerala is a very small place in terms of making films. Hindi films are made for an international market, and we have a very small market. Like Telugu has got a major market in India, Tamil also has a big market.. Malayalam the main markets are: Middle East, Europe but its a small market," Mohanlal said.

"So the difference between south and Hindi films will reflect in all segments from production to song or dance sequences, stories, also. If I am acting in a Malayalam film then it is for Kerala audience so we can chose films that they like. Hindi films are amazing, trying new films, multiplex revolution is there... new method of doing cinema," he said.

Mohanlal would be seen next in Priyadarshan’s action-thriller Tezz alongside Ajay Devgn, Anil Kapoor, Kangana Ranuat, Zayed Khan, Sameera Reddy. The film releases on April 27.

"Unknowingly again, I am playing a police officer in Tezz, it is a small role. But the placement of the role is very critical in the film. I feel it is one of the best films of Priyan as I have seen the film partly, specially the making of the film and the action sequences are amazing. Also, this is my third film with Ajay Devgn, its all happening, I had not planned our anything," he said.

On difference while acting in Hindi and regional films, he said, "Nothing much... as lights, camera all same, only the language (changes). (Difference lies in ) How you portray yourself in a film with your intelligence and how you put efforts is your entire look out."

"I have done films in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, I dont find any difference. I am not fluent in Hindi. I used to learn Hindi but no one over there speaks Hindi so it is not that fluent. As far as doing films in various languages is concerned you have to by-heart your dialogues for that," he said.
